Summary of Duties:

We are looking for a person who has practical skills to assist in maintaining residential properties owned by the Canadian High Commission in London. If you can turn your hand to a variety of practical tasks e.g. repairs, decorating, carpentry, able to lift and carry reasonable loads, have a can-do attitude, enjoy providing excellent client service and working in a team environment, this could be the right opportunity for you.

Under the general direction and supervision of the Residential Property Manager, the Maintenance Technician provides general maintenance services and assists with and carries out direct repairs. Some examples include but are not limited to: putting up blinds and curtains; regularly descaling and disinfecting taps, showerheads and hoses for legionella prevention; re-dooring bathroom or kitchen cupboards; sanding down and re-staining wood flooring; installing new flooring; re-tiling; renewing plumbing fixtures (taps, showerheads, handrails); installing a new shower tray; unblocking drains; changing door handles and locks; making good to walls and ceilings after a leak; mastic and sealing showers and baths; regrouting; changing light fixtures and plugs.

This includes planning and preparing preventive maintenance schedules and assisting other maintenance team members on various projects, as required.  Related activities include:

  • providing written assessments and advice on scope, solutions and cost estimates for projects or maintenance/repair work;
  • maintaining a network of contacts with local service providers, suppliers and contractors;
  • conducting inspections pre- and post-occupancy, including any outfitting that may be required;
  • completing related administrative tasks; and
  • assisting the Property Services Assistant or Specialised Technician.

Area of Selection:

Open to applicants who are legal residents or citizens of the United Kingdom, who hold current documentation allowing them to work in the UK without restriction, who meet all the essential requirements stated, and whose applications are received by the closing date.

Candidates holding documentation/visas not renewable in the UK such as the Youth Mobility Visa will not be eligible to apply for this position.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates will initially be screened against the Essential Qualifications relating to education, language* and experience.

Education:

Candidates will be required to provide proof of the completion of their education.

Fluency in English (oral and written).

Experience:

Recent work experience involving carrying out repairs to furniture, fixtures and appliances; or carrying out general maintenance on a building e.g. painting, carpentry

 

RATED REQUIREMENTS

The Rated Requirements are part of the essential qualifications and are relating to knowledge, abilities and competencies. Methods of assessment for rated requirements may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, an oral interview (online pre-recorded/live or in-person), role-play, practical tests, presentations and/or psychometric assessment.

 

Knowledge:

  • Able to understand and comply with relevant legislation, codes and standards as required

Competencies:

  • Client focus;
  • Able to take the Initiative and prioritize as required
  • Teamwork

Abilities: 

  • Basic computer skills, i.e. ability to use Microsoft Outlook email software

Asset Qualifications:

Preference may be given to candidates who meet the Asset Qualifications. Where applicable, candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet any asset qualifications.

  • Qualifications in a technical skill e.g. carpentry, etc.
  • Experience working in a job role providing support in more than one of the following areas:
    1. Repairing furniture and fixtures and/or appliances
    2. Painting and decorating
    3. Carpentry
  • Ability to assist with audio-visual equipment set-up and troubleshooting

Organizational Needs: 

Applicants must possess a valid driving licence, including driving ‘manual’ vehicles.

Operational Requirements:

  • Willing and able to work extended hours on occasion, sometimes with little advance notice
  • Hours of work will be 37.5 per week, worked Monday to Friday on a schedule to be arranged with the supervisor.

Conditions of Employment:

Conditions of employment must be met or complied with before being appointed to a particular position, and are to be maintained throughout the employment while being the incumbent of this position.

– Valid work authorization: Ability to obtain and hold a valid work authorization covering the entire employment period.

– Security screening: Obtain and maintain a Reliability Status (security level) which includes a criminal and credit background check from the Government of Canada covering the entire employment period.

– Other conditions of employment:

  • Any job offer is subject to receipt of satisfactory employment and character references and the ability to obtain and maintain a Reliability security screening (including a criminal record and credit check).
  • The successful candidate must have the required documentation allowing the right to work in the UK. Documentation will be required.
  • Applicants must possess a valid driving license, including driving ‘manual’ vehicles.
