About the employer

The role will work on the HS2 project. HS2 is the UK’s new high-speed rail network. It will be a catalyst for economic growth across Britain, freeing up space on the existing railways and connecting 8 out of the UK’s 10 biggest cities with fast, reliable and frequent high-speed services

The materials used on construction projects, be it concrete, aggregate, soils, or steel, need to be tested to ensure they comply with site, national, and international regulations.

Level 3 Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship Standard:

  • NVQ Level 3 in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities
  • Level 2 functional skills in maths and English (if required)

The post holder will be required to participate in the formal apprenticeship scheme which will include attendance at an appropriate place:

  • To undertake a range of tasks suited to the current level of training and development
  • To attend college and complete course work on time and to a high standard
  • To take on additional responsibility in Years 2 and 3 of apprenticeship
  • To understand and complete all work-related activities on time
  • To understand and comply with policies and procedures other than HSE
  • To attend and fully participate in regular training, career and development reviews with line management, college staff, and other interested parties
  • To undertake additional duties in line with capabilities as required
  • Carry out in-situ and laboratory testing for concrete, bituminous material, aggregates, and soils on civil engineering construction site
  • Ensure laboratory/work area is kept in a tidy and safe condition at all times and report any broken or damaged equipment to the Senior Member
  • Training will be provided to ensure testing is completed to the relevant standard in accordance with UKAS schedule
  • Flexibility to work on different sections

The post holder will be expected to keep a work diary outlining their training progress throughout the course of the apprenticeship. This diary will be formally reviewed on a periodic basis with an appropriate line manager and/or representative of the appropriate apprenticeship awarding body. The ability to work as part of a team, attend team meetings, eventually contribute to appropriate discussions, written and verbal. Additionally, a flexible approach, able to work towards understood objectives and deadlines and self-motivated towards becoming part of what is a continuous learning environment.

Desired qualifications

  • For a Level 3 qualification, other employers will often after for a C/4 grade (or equivalent) in GCSE maths and English, as well as science, if relevant to the role
  • Other qualifications such as a driving licence can be included, but please be clear on why they are required – for example, if driving is essential to the role
  • A Level 3 (or higher) qualification in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and maths
  • A driving licence would be preferable but not essential as sites are accessible by public transport

Future prospects

  • Attainment of Registered Science Technician (RSciTech)
  • Apprentices may progress within their current place of employment, or find opportunities in other companies, to become Senior Science Technicians or Laboratory Managers. They may also look to continue their training on the Level 6 Laboratory Scientist Degree Apprenticeship, allowing them to become a Registered Scientist (RSci)
  • Apprentices who complete the Health & Safety induction phase of this training will gain an Apprentice CSCS card. Upon completion of this apprenticeship, apprentices will gain a Gold Advanced Craft CSCS Card
